Abstract:
This paper discusses a proposal for an ontological taxonomy for mental models. First, some previous work regarding mental models is discussed briefly. Then, a foundation for mental models as cognitive knowledge constructs is set up. This is used to distinguish between three types of knowledge representation. The foundation is constituted by a conceptual apparatus acquired from philosophy of science. Then, it is shown how neural networks can represent these three types of knowledge. Finally, it is explained how mental models can be simulated in different network architectures.
